Tighten or replace loose fixings, resecure lifting gravel boards, and replace any cracked or split panels before winter. In clay-heavy ground across Evesham, Cheltenham, and Moreton-in-Marsh, frost causes significant soil movement that stresses fence posts heavily.
Remove moss, algae, and surface dirt before applying a wood preservative or treatment. A quality water-repellent stain or preservative applied in dry conditions — ideally late September or October — seals the grain against moisture ingress. Untreated timber absorbs water, swells, and then cracks as it dries — accelerating decay significantly. This is especially important for gardens across Gloucestershire and Warwickshire where winter rainfall is high.
Check that all fence panels are secure before the first winter storms. Loose panels act as sails and transfer significant force to posts.
