Walk your fence line in early autumn. Check posts for movement — any wobble indicates a post base problem that will worsen with frozen ground expanding around it. Tighten or replace loose fixings, resecure lifting gravel boards, and replace any cracked or split panels before winter. In clay-heavy ground across Evesham, Cheltenham, and Moreton-in-Marsh, frost causes significant soil movement that stresses fence posts heavily.
Remove moss, algae, and surface dirt before applying a wood preservative or treatment. A quality water-repellent stain or preservative applied in dry conditions — ideally late September or October — seals the grain against moisture ingress. Untreated timber absorbs water, swells, and then cracks as it dries — accelerating decay significantly. This is especially important for gardens across Gloucestershire and Warwickshire where winter rainfall is high.
