The vast majority of retaining wall failures across Worcestershire come down to three engineering deficiencies: inadequate foundation depth, insufficient drainage, and poor backfill material. In clay-heavy ground around Evesham and Cheltenham, water builds up behind walls and creates hydrostatic pressure that pushes structures outward. Without drainage relief, even well-built walls eventually fail.
Every retaining wall needs a perforated land drain at its base, covered with free-draining angular aggregate rather than clay or soil. This drain carries water away before pressure builds. Weep holes through masonry walls provide additional relief.
