The most reliable method for bedding paving slabs is a full mortar bed — mortar covering the entire underside of the slab, with no voids. A cheaper and faster alternative is to spot-bed: placing five blobs of mortar at the corners and centre. Spot-bedded slabs are structurally inferior from day one, particularly on clay ground. Any unevenness in the sub-base beneath creates a pivot point, and the slab rocks immediately or begins rocking within a season or two.
If your patio has open joints or cracked jointing compound, water enters the gaps and washes out the sand or mortar beneath each slab over time. Once the bedding is uneven or absent in places, the slab loses its stable platform. The heavier the slab, the more dramatically it rocks. This process accelerates in winter when frost also disrupts the bedding from below.
Even correctly bedded slabs can begin to rock if the sub-base beneath them moves. In Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, clay soils contract in dry summers and expand in wet winters. If the sub-base layer isn't thick enough to buffer this movement, it transmits directly to the bedding layer and then to the slab. Slabs in corners and along edges are often the first to be affected.
Roots growing beneath a patio create uneven upward pressure. They lift one side of a slab while leaving the other side at its original level, producing an obvious rocking motion. In established gardens across the Cotswolds and Vale of Evesham, root intrusion is a common cause of rocking slabs that returns quickly even after re-bedding.
