The Problem

The property was coming to the end of it's 1.5 years development process, and it was the exciting time to do the front garden. Living in Vauxhall parking is hard to come by and the plot being split into 2 separate houses meant that car storage was going to be a major consideration. Easy maintenance is also a major feature Vicky wanted, with privacy as a top priority.

Our Solution

A full 1.75m mixed hedge was installed around the perimeter of the property, consisting of 105 trees in total. Fagus sylvatica / Beech, Fagus sylvatica Purpurea / Copper Beech, Crataegus monogyna / Hawthorn, Ilex aquifolium / Holly to provide the screening Vicky wanted. A gold gravel was installed for the cars to park on, extending from the beautiful colour of the bungalows bricks, surrounded by raised planted beds to ensure Vicky can tend the garden in a controlled space. Automated irrigation as then installed along the hegde to ensure it stays heralthy and watered for the rest of the properties consturction and years to come.

Project Execution

The first three days were dedicated to clearing the site and establishing a blank canvas. A total of 20 tonnes of rock, soil, concrete and sand were removed and separated for disposal. Once the correct working height was achieved, trenches were dug along the surrounding hedge line, with as much existing soil stripped out as possible to allow fresh material for the new planting. An industrial compactor roller was then run across the entire site to consolidate the ground and prevent future settlement from vehicle movements.

With the foundations complete, Terram permeable membrane was laid across the full area, excluding the hedge trench, to suppress weed growth and reduce long- erm maintenance. The raised planters were then installed and filled with 10 tonnes of topsoil, and the central path was laid to divide the property into its two distinct sides.

Over 12 tonnes of gravel were spread across both driveway areas, and a further delivery of topsoil was brought in ahead of hedge planting. Before the hedge could be established, the irrigation system was first installed along the full hedge line to ensure it was correctly positioned and buried. The hedge was then planted, and finishing details were added to complete the scheme.

The project was delivered in a total of 10 days.

Results

Vicky is delighted with the finished front garden. Over the coming years the hedge will mature and thicken, delivering the screening and privacy she was looking for. Thanks to thorough ground preparation, the gravel driveway will remain stable and low-maintenance for years to come. Vicky has the flexibility to be as involved or hands-off with the garden maintenance as she chooses. Later in the year we will return to carry out the rear garden transformation.
